Rose Oliver was born on June 24, 1931 in Memphis, TN to Martha and James Neal and grew up in a loving home in St. Louis, MO. There she met and married her loving late husband, US Air Force Sargent, Cecil Oliver. The two of them and their young family were stationed abroad for several years, then arrived at Riverside’s March Air Force Base. Rose began her professional life as an elementary school teacher at Riverside’s Longfellow Elementary.
A Riverside resident since June 1958, she has been involved in numerous civic, social and cultural activities. During the fundraising activities of the Riverside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Visionaries, Rose Oliver served on Mayor Loveridge’s Ribbon Committee chaired by UCR Vice Chancellor, Dr. James Erickson. She served on the African American Concerned Citizens Committee, an Advisory group to UCR Chancellors.
Rose Oliver was a volunteer for many local organizations which has had a sustaining impact in the community. During her time with the Riverside YWCA, she introduced the idea for “Men Who Cook.” This project proved to be a successful annual fund-raisier for the organization. Rose Oliver was recognized in 2003 by the Southern California Chapter of The International Relations Council in appreciation for her many years of service to the Riverside Community. She served with distinction during 1995-96 as the President of the Council.
Rose Oliver is survived by her 3 adult children, Sandra Parker (deceased), Brenda K. Oliver, Cecil J, Oliver Jr., and Craig J. Oliver, as well as nine grandchildren.
