Maceo Haymon Jr. was the nineth of twelve children born to the union of Maceo and Equilla Haymon of McKamie, Arkansas. Both parents preceded Maceo Jr. in death. Maceo’s beloved mother Equilla passed away in 1948, and subsequently, his father, Maceo Sr., met and married Ruth M. Johnson, Principal of CS Woodward High School in McKamie, AR. Ruth also preceded Maceo Jr. in death in 2018.
As a young child, Maceo expressed his personal hopes and love to Jesus Christ, he was baptized and joined Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in McKamie, AR, under the leadership of the late Reverend Russ.
Maceo’s educational journey began at CS Woodward Elementary/Junior High School and continued at Walker High School, where he graduated in 1955 in Magnolia AR. While attending Walker High School, Maceo joined the high school marching band, where he learned to play the trumpet.
After graduating from high school, Maceo joined the US Navy and completed basic training in San Diego, CA. After basic training, Maceo was assigned to the USS Helena, stationed in Long Beach, CA. Onboard the Helena, Maceo had many different assignments, including several Western Pacific Cruises, traveling to places like Hawaii, Guam, the Philippines, Japan and many other smaller ports. After completing four years of service, in 1959, Maceo was honorably discharged from the Navy.
Shortly after being discharged from the Navy, Maceo met Gertrude Thompson and after a short courtship, they were united in Holy Matrimony. Maceo and Gertrude were the parents of two children, Ronald and Veronica Haymon. Maceo’s and Gertrude’s marriage ended in 1974.
During the 1970’s, Maceo began employment with the US Postal Service. During his employment, Maceo held various positions such as clerk and supervisor in Health and Safety, serving as a counselor. In approximately 1999, Maceo retired from the Postal Service, after a well-respected career.
In 1978, Maceo met Mary “Evelyn” Givhan at George Chevrolet in Lakewood, CA. After a long courtship, in 1990, Maceo and Evelyn were united in Holy Matrimony in Las Vegas, Nevada. Maceo and Evelyn had a lot in common, they both enjoyed horse racing, playing the slots in Vegas and traveling. Maceo and Evelyn purchased a luxury motorhome where traveling the country with their Granddaughter Gia was added to their life experiences. Maceo and Evelyn resided in Compton CA, from the late 1970’s to 1987. Next, Maceo and Evelyn moved to Long Beach, Calif, where they lived for many years. Maceo and Evelyn eventually moved to Las Vegas, NV. in 2000, Suwannee, GA in 2006, and back to California in 2015, where they settled in Moreno Valley.
In Moreno Valley, Maceo became a member of Trinity Baptist Church (2015-2020). While at Trinity Baptist, Maceo was a valued member, and he served the church wherever he was needed. Maceo’s final assignment was caring for children in the nursery.
Maceo’s wife of 33 years Evelyn preceded him in death on July 29, 2023. Maceo was also preceded in death by sons Dale and Frank Jones. Siblings who preceded Maceo in death are Florence Haymon-Heads of Houston, TX; Theresa Haymon-Jackson of Houston, TX; Ruth Haymon-Jackson, of Houston, TX; Neoma Haymon-Robinson of Magnolia, AR; Neomi Haymon-Crawford of Houston, TX; Mack Haymon, of Chicago, IL; Marie Haymon-O'Kain of St Louis, MO; Larice Haymon of Magnolia, AR; and Gwendolyn Johnson-Flores of Austin, TX.
Maceo will be remembered by his loving family: Brothers; Elder Nathan Haymon (Mae) of Chicago, IL; Edwin Haymon (Mae Otis) of Apple Valley, CA; James Ronald Haymon of Duncanville, TX; Reuben Johnson (Deborah) of Woodbridge, VA; Sister; Alice Faye Johnson-Norful, Memphis TN; Children Ronald Haymon (Margie) Baltimore, MD; Veronica Haymon, Fort Worth, TX; Linda Randell, Jacksonville, FL; Anthony Givhan (Angela) Bellflower, CA; Monique Givhan, Riverside, CA; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
