Obituary for Lawrence Eddie McCrary Sr.

Lawrence Eddie McCrary Sr. was born on November 29, 1927, in Chicago, Illinois. He spent his formative years on the South Side of Chicago, lovingly raised by his grandmother, grandfather, and mother. These early years cultivated his integrity, resilience, and boundless curiosity.

On Christmas Eve, Lawrence received a divine call from God, who informed him that his heavenly home was complete. Surrounded by his loving family in his home, he peacefully transitioned into eternity with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Lawrence accepted Christ at an early age, attending the AME Church with his grandmother, which instilled in him enduring values of faith and community.

Lawrence embraced a life full of passion and determination. He had the will of a tiger, and even as his health began to decline, his strength surpassed far beyond his circumstances, inspiring everyone around him.

He cultivated a deep love for music, mastering the trombone and sharing his talent locally, enriching his community through heartfelt performances. While serving in the U.S. Air Force, he was a member of a special musical unit, spreading joy and camaraderie among his peers.

A man of many talents and adventures, Lawrence delighted in fishing, swimming, high diving, water skiing, cooking, camping in his motorhome, and roller skating. Known for his impeccable sense of style, he was always dressed to the nines, leaving a lasting impression wherever he went.

Lawrence dedicated over 25 years to a successful career with the public transportation system (RTD) as a streetcar conductor and later as a trainer for new drivers. He also became a licensed barber in California, celebrated for his precision and skill in grooming.

A proud 32-Degree Mason, Shriner, and past officer in the Elk Lodge, Lawrence exemplified leadership, integrity, and a deep commitment to serving others.

Family was the cornerstone of Lawrence’s life. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Nan, whose love and companionship were his greatest treasures. He was a devoted father to Wanda, Marcette, Lawrence Eddie Jr., Danisha, Denise, Mark, Vanessa, and the late Doreen and David. He also leaves behind 11 cherished grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two dear nieces, Temetry Lindsey and Tanya Thornton, who will continue to honor his legacy of love, wisdom, and strength.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his sister, Margie Melton, his daughter Doreen, and his son David.

Lawrence Eddie McCrary Sr. lived a life brimming with purpose, adventure, and an unwavering dedication to his family and community. His memory will forever be cherished by all who knew and loved him.

You will be greatly missed. Your energy and smile always brightened my day. You were my strength and inspiration. Thank you for being such an exceptional companion.
