Herman William Carpenter Jr., 66, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2024, in Menifee,
California.
Herman was born on December 3, 1957 to the late Lt. Herman Carpenter Sr. and Beatrice
Carpenter in Riverside, California. Herman, affectionately known as “June Bug,” was the eldest
of four children. He was raised in Riverside and attended West Riverside Elementary School,
Emerson Elementary School, University Heights Middle School, Central Middle School, and
Riverside Poly High School. Upon graduating from Poly High School, Herman attended
Riverside City College where he was a wide receiver on the RCC Tigers football team. He then
transferred to Glassboro State University in Glassboro, New Jersey, where he continued his
college football career. Herman excelled academically (skipped a grade) and in sports, especially
football, basketball, and baseball. He was also a voracious reader,
Herman absolutely loved working as a long-haul truck driver and the freedom it gave him to
explore and see different people and places. It gave him the opportunity to visit many family
members and friends who lived across the country. Herman always had funny and elaborate
stories to share with those he encountered and visited, and he made it his life’s mission and
ministry to stay connected with those he loved by calling them or visiting them in person.
Herman was known for his outgoing personality, kindness, and generosity. He loved the Lord,
people and helping others in need. He served faithfully as an usher and groundskeeper at St.
James Church of God in Christ in Riverside.
Herman is survived by his loving mother, Beatrice Carpenter; his brothers Harold and Michael
Carpenter; his sister, Michelle Ward (Russell); his daughter, Ashleigh Merchant; his grandson,
Jaedyn Pitts; his aunt Doris Bundy; and a host of cousins and friends.
Herman Jr. was preceded in death by his father, Lt. Herman Carpenter Sr.
